New York Red Bulls’ head of sport Jochen Schneider is excited by what the future holds after former Celtic winger Lewis Morgan signed a three-year contract extension at the MLS side.

The 25-year-old, who began his career at St Mirren before moving to Parkhead in 2018, originally moved to the United States in 2020 to join the newly-established Inter Miami franchise – where he played alongside former Real Madrid, Juventus and Chelsea centre-forward Gonzalo Higuain – and won the club’s Most Valuable Player award in his first season.

Morgan then joined New York Red Bulls in December 2021 and enjoyed a fine debut campaign in the Big Apple, scoring 18 goals – becoming the first player since Bradley Wright-Phillips in 2018 to register a double-digit goal tally at the club – and providing four assists in 36 appearances in all competitions.

That form has led to the MLS outfit moving quickly to tie the winger down on a longer deal and now that the Scot has put pen to paper, the Red Bulls coaching staff are looking forward to getting the most out of him over the next few seasons.

“We are extremely happy to be able to sign Lewis to a new contract,” Schneider said. “He had a tremendous first season with us, where he was a main contributor for the club, and we are excited to keep him at the club.”

Head coach Gerhard Struber, meanwhile, believes that Morgan’s extension will allow the club to push on when the new season gets under way.

“Lewis was a very important player for our club last season,” Struber told the New York Red Bulls website.

“He is a great player and person, who we are very excited to have with us and help us accomplish our goals for this season.”
