Chris Sutton understands the Celtic appeal toward highly-rated coach Enzo Maresca.

The Hoops hero has addressed his old club's search for a new gaffer, following the departure of Ange Postecoglou on Tuesday.

The 57-year-old left Glasgow after only two years to join Tottenham Hotspur on a four-year deal.

Even before the deal was concluded, attention swiftly turned to who will be coming in as the Australian's replacement.

Maresca has been heavily touted for the job, alongside Kjetil Knutsen.

Brendan Rodgers is the favourite, with betting suspended on the Irishman yesterday.

But it's Maresca of Manchester City who has caught the eye of Sutton, who insists Guardiola's trust in the Italian could be a huge indicator.

He wrote in the Daily Record: “I read that Guardiola said he is going to make an extraordinary manager like Arteta. With that in mind, I can see a lot of reasons why Maresca would appeal.

“I’ve no idea whether he could handle the environment in Glasgow, or whether he’s cut out to be a manager in his own right. But the fact Guardiola got him back to be his assistant after the job at Parma didn’t work out for him suggests he rates him.

“And, let’s face it, if Pep phones you up and says he’s got a guy who’s pretty damn good at coaching players, you are going to listen.”
