He doesn't quite fit into the unsung hero category at Celtic. He's far too loud for that.

Alistair Johnston has found his voice in the dressing room as well as his crossing boots. The Canadian was The Celtic Way's Star Man by some distance during the 3-0 Scottish Premiership win over St Mirren which moved Brendan Rodgers's men four points clear of Rangers for 24 hours at least.

The ice hockey fanatic stepped up to the plexiglass for his club once again. The 25-year-old right back was excellent and has been in a rich vein of form for the past few weeks. He has rediscovered the form that saw him scoop the domestic treble within months of joining Celtic under the previous managerial regime of Ange Postecoglou. Brendan Rodgers paid tribute to the man who contributed two assists - one for Reo Hatate and Kyogo Furuhashi - as Celtic turned on the style after the break to shatter St Mirren's stubborn resistance. None more so than Johnston.

As Rodgers said it was the defender who helped make the game and the points safe on the hour mark as his magnificent delivery from the right was bulleted home by the head of Japanese talisman Kyogo from inside the six-yard box. Kyogo couldn't miss as he scored the second goal which turned out to be the clincher.

Rodgers said: "The second goal came from a brilliant cross from Alistair Johnston and the movement of Kyogo. It is what his game is all about. He made space for himself. In his first movement, he takes the defender the wrong way and then he is there to finish."

Brilliant is doing Johnston's contribution to the Celtic cause against the Saints a disservice. Former Celtic striker Simon Donnelly was fulsome in his praise of Johnston. He called the cross 'David Beckham-esque'. The delivery was on the money Kyogo didn't even have to break stride to cash in as he took his tally to 16 for the campaign.

Johnston in the process made it five assists for the campaign as he gave a man-of-the-match performance although the sponsors gave the awards to Reo Hatate who scored a sublime goal... provided by Johnston, of course, who else?

With five games left in the league and a Scottish Cup semi-final to come against Aberdeen at Hampden next weekend, Johnston clearly understands the assignment. He is chasing a Scottish Premiership and Scottish Cup double. As Johnston said when he spoke to Celtic TV: "The mindset we have is that every game will be like a cup final. We can see the light at the end of the tunnel. The finish line is close. We know that every single point matters. We are excited by that challenge. Our crowd is as well.

"It is going to be a big six weeks or so here. We look at this as an amazing opportunity to come out here and play our football and win every match. If we come out and do what we need to do then we can make this a special season and that's the aim."

Johnston has already helped Canada seal their place at the Copa America after they prevailed over Trinidad and Tobago in the final round of the CONCACAF Nations League. He is of vital importance to Celtic. After all, Johnston is a prototype Rodgers full-back. Tenacious in the tackle and marauding up and down the right-hand side. What more could the Northern Irishman want?

His contribution in an attacking sense can sometimes be overlooked but he has largely addressed any issues regarding that lately. Johnston was outstanding against St Mirren. His return to excellent form is as welcome as it is timely. He will continue to be a key player for Rodgers and Celtic as the title run reaches its climax.

Johnston doesn't have any plexiglass ceilings when it comes to his club ambitions. He'd shatter through them if he did. Celtic can still make this a special season as Johnston rightfully said. A season with a double silver lining.
