Joe Hart: It was a welcome return to the biggest club stage of all for the Celtic number one. He was sent scrambling across his line when Fede Valverde hammered one just wide and spread himself brilliantly to deny Vinicius Jnr the opening goal at an important time in the game. He was well beaten - by the Brazilian then Luka Modric and Eden Hazard - for all three Real Madrid goals. 7

Josip Juranovic: The Croatian battered into Vinicius Jnr early on to let the Brazilian know he was in a contest. His distribution was slack at times but he did win some tasty tackles. He was up against it as Vinicius teased and tormented him. His cross into the box for Daizen Maeda deserved a more clinical finish but he crucially lost Vinicius Jnr for Madrid's opening goal. 7

Cameron Carter-Vickers: The American initially saw Karim Benzema off the premises inside the opening 30 minutes. Later, he got drawn to the ball to help out central defensive partner Jenz as the back four was carved open and then clumsily crashed into Giorgos Giakoumakis in the lead-up to Modric doubling Madrid's lead. 7

Moritz Jenz: German centre-back Jenz came in for the injured Carl Starfelt and learned a harsh lesson. He made several timely blocks and interceptions but was done all ends up by Valverde's brilliant flick and spin which took him right out of the play for the lead-up to the opening goal. His last-ditch tackle attempt couldn't prevent Modric from claiming a killer second either. 7

Greg Taylor: Scotland defender Taylor had his work cut out in the first half trying to prevent Valverde and the marauding Daniel Carvajal from pinning him back for long periods but he stuck manfully to the task. Offensively he was good and he always kept the ball moving whenever he could. 7

Callum McGregor: The Hoops skipper willed his side to draw Real Madrid and finally got his wish. He was unlucky not to open the scoring when his effort smacked off the inside of the post while he hustled, harried and created space for himself at every available opportunity. 8

Matt O'Riley: Produced some silky and slick passing moments and pressed Real high in their own half whenever he could. His little give-and-gos with Reo Hatate, Taylor and Jota gave Madrid food for thought and his one and two-touch football did not look out of place against the kings of Europe. 8

Reo Hatate: The 24-year-old picked out a sublime crossfield first-time pass to Jota in the opening exchanges and almost played in Giakoumakis too. He is such an intelligent footballer and he stung Thibaut Courtois's palms with a drive while putting in an incredible shift in the engine room. What a player he is turning out to be. 8

Jota: This was his platform to shine. In the first half he produced an incredible defence-splitting pass for Liel Abada, who shot tamely at goal. The wide man flitted in and out of proceedings thereafter but not enough to turn the game in the hosts' favour. 7

Liel Abada: Abada retained his place in the starting XI after notching five goals in his last three games and he crashed a deflected shot inches wide inside 30 seconds. He spurned a one-on-one after he opted to shoot early which Courtois easily gathered. He was well policed by Ferland Mendy for the most part and found it hard to wriggle free from the clutches of his marker. Made way for Maeda at the interval. 5

Giorgos Giakoumakis: The Greek striker has 20 goals in 35 appearances for Celtic but this was his sternest test to date. He was a big powerhouse and posed real problems to Militao with good old-fashioned centre forward play and excellently teed up McGregor for his shot that struck the post. He dragged Militao all over the place and engaged him in a battle that he didn't want to be involved in - so much so that he failed to reappear after the interval. 7

Substitutes

Daizen Maeda: Replaced Abada at the break in a tactical switch. The ball fell at his feet inside two minutes but he couldn't adjust himself for the clean connection that would have brought the breakthrough goal. 6

Aaron Mooy: Replaced O'Riley on 71 minutes as he was tiring after a decent shift. 4

David Turnbull: Came on for Hatate with just under 20 minutes to go. 4

Kyogo Furuhashi: Talismanic striker entered the fray with a quarter of the game left and sent an effort wide of the target. 4

Sead Haksabanovic: Given the final eight minutes in place of Jota and looked really sharp and lively and he forced Courtois into a fine one-handed save. 4
