Engels, Saracchi: How every Celtic player performed in Hibs draw

Starting XI

Kasper Schmeichel

A bystander in the first half, Schmeichel had a good view of the action, with the Denmark veteran not called into action once before half-time. Had nothing to do for the whole game, keeping a clean sheet in the process for his side

Anthony Ralston

Replacing Colby Donovan in the starting line-up, the Scotland international looked to get forward at every opportunity, as Celtic attacked their opponents. Admittedly, however, much of the action came from the opposite side, where Tounekti and Saracchi were situated. Pushed hard for the full 90 minutes, though the Scotland international lacked any quality with his crossing and attacking play.

Cameron Carter-Vickers

Despite picking up a slight knock during the game against Red Star, Carter-Vickers shook off any injury worries, as he started alongside Scales. As usual, he patrolled his own half well, getting the better of both Martin Boyle and Kieron Bowie at different points in the opening half. Was booked for what looked like a clean tackle in the second half, after bailing out Scales for an error at the back. Solid throughout from the USA defender, who kept the backline secure.

Liam Scales

One of Celtic’s better players so far this season, Scales was partnered alongside Carter-Vickers, as not many attacks came his way to defend in the opening 45. He acquitted himself well, though some of his forward passing could have been a little quicker. Mistakes crept into the Irishman’s game, as he was booked for a professional foul, before being careless in possession, which resulted in Carter-Vickers going in the referee’s book. Kept a clean sheet, though he had little to defend.

Marcelo Saracchi

Back in the side after a couple of substitute appearances, the Uruguayan looked bright, as he played both traditionally and inverted at the left-back position. Allowing Tounekti the space to drive forward, Saracchi stayed back, while providing his teammates with an outlet through the middle when needed. A quiet second half for the adventurous defender, who had less of the ball to work with. One of Celtic’s better players on the day - admittedly, not a difficult feat to accomplish.

Callum McGregor

The skipper started as usual at the base of midfield, as Celtic looked to work the ball through both the centre and out wide. He had a couple of speculative shots in the opening half, the best of which was well saved by the Hibs keeper, though it was central in its direction. Pushed hard in the second half, but his side struggled to get going with any real fluidity - not through a lack of trying.

Arne Engels

A bit of a frustrating watch, Engels’ passing was very mixed, with the Belgian international getting caught on the ball on a couple of occasions. Drafted back into the side, the midfielder has so much talent and ability, though he failed to assert his authority in the first half for Celtic. After failing to make any impact after the break, he was replaced by Benjamin Nygren. Another game that passed Engels by, as question marks continue to swirl around Celtic’s record signing.

Luke McCowan

A bright spark for Celtic in the opening stages, McCowan’s passing was crisp and tidy, allowing his side to go forward and attack the opposition. Showing a different side to his game, the former Hibs target looked to put on a show against his long-time admirers, as he was the best of Celtic’s midfield three in the opening half. After a quiet opening to the restart, McCowan was brought off for Paulo Bernardo. Perhaps a change that shouldn’t have been made by the manager in hindsight.

Daizen Maeda

Playing on the right to accommodate others, Maeda stayed in the starting line-up, despite being hooked at half-time in midweek. He should have had an assist to his name, with his pass finding Iheanacho, who smashed the crossbar. Working hard, his dedication to the cause could not be argued, with the Japan international providing a positive outlet on the right wing. Like many of his teammates, his impact waned in the second half, with Johnny Kenny taking his place with 20 minutes to go.

Kelechi Iheanacho

Celtic’s new striker made his first appearance at home for the club and should have broken his Parkhead duck after 20 minutes, with his shot crashing off the post from close range. An intelligent forward, who knows his role, the Nigerian held the ball up well, bringing his teammates into the game, as he looked for his first goal at Celtic Park. Unfortunately, it did not come, despite putting the ball in the back of the net – which VAR ruled out for offside. Was replaced by James Forrest, as Maeda went through the middle. Should have scored at least one goal today, which will disappoint the ex-Leicester City man

Sebastian Tounekti

His home debut for Celtic, the Tunisian winger looked up for it from the off, with Hibs’ defenders struggling to deal with him when in possession. Keen to take on his marker at every available opportunity, he looked to entertain those who came to see him for the first time. Michel-Ange Balikwisha replaced the wide-man, as his race was ran after a quiet second half. A tale of two halves for the new signing, though perhaps he should have been kept on, given Balikwisha’s lack of an impact in his place

Subtitutions

James Forrest

Tried hard, but not his day out wide. Struggled to make any sort of impact when coming on, though he wasn’t the only one.

Benjamin Nygren

Worked his socks off to make something happen, though to no avail. Will likely start the next game, given his importance to the team.

Paulo Bernardo

Had a late chance, which stung the palms of the Hibs keeper.

Johnny Kenny

Should have scored right at the death with a header, which was well saved by the keeper. Poor execution kept the game level for both sides from the young striker.

Michel-Ange Balikwisha

Did little to impact the game. Need more from the summer signing, and quickly.
