Former Dundee United coach Adam Asghar is reportedly a leading candidate for a key post at Celtic.

The Southampton under-21 head coach has been linked with taking over as Celtic under-18 chief.

The Daily Record claims Asghar has "caught the eye" of Brendan Rodgers and his staff.

Asghar previously worked at Sunderland where his youth side ran Manchester City close in the under-19 Premier League. He also coached the first team at Dundee United following stints at Motherwell's academy and the Scottish FA coaching school at Braidhurst.

The recent development comes after reports Jonny Hayes and Charlie Mulgrew were under consideration for the job.

Last month the ex-Celtic duo were linked with the position at Celtic after Stuart McLaren left the role.

However, it's reported Celtic could make a handful of appointments in their academy with a B team coaching spot also open after Darren O'Dea became professional player pathway manager at the club.

It's thought Celtic could hire a coach for the under-18 and B team job and then another coach to aid the development sides.

Former B team boss O'Dea will oversee the development and progression of youth players into the first-team at Celtic.

On the role, O'Dea said: "Having been fortunate enough to be part of a Celtic first-team environment in my career I am passionate about working to give other young players this same opportunity.

"In this new role, I will be working between our academy structure and the first-team environment to ensure that we do all we can to provide the very best pathway and levels of support to allow our young players to reach their full potential and to ultimately deliver at first-team level.”
