Chris Sutton has no doubt Peter Lawwell's Celtic statement "didn't cut it".

The former Parkhead striker was left unimpressed by comments from the chairman in the club's interim report on Friday.

Lawwell had shared his frustrations over a slow January transfer window and insisted only making two signings - Adam Idah and Nicolas Kuhn - was "never the intention".

However, Sutton reckons there were not enough answers in Lawwell's statement as he insisted Celtic left themselves open to criticism with only collective responsibility assumed over the transfer issue.

In his Daily Record column, Sutton wrote: "Peter Lawwell didn't have anywhere to go with Celtic's interim report. He knew it, everyone knew it, he basically admitted as much and a fair few of his comments didn't cut it for me.

"I’ll be honest, I’m not sure there were enough satisfactory answers in there to key questions.

"Mainly, the disappointment of failing to further add to the squad.

"Collective responsibility was taken, but it doesn’t change anything and the big question is why were these mistakes made? Who is to blame?

"If funds were available, there’s a culpability somewhere and, although they’ll never actually say, that’s the point and it leaves Celtic wide open to criticism and speculation."

Lawwell had commented in the club interim report: "The Board shares the frustrations of the supporters regarding the less than anticipated activity in the recent transfer window.

"The Board's commitment is to strengthen and improve the playing squad in every transfer window and although resources were available, we were unable to further add to the squad due to the unavailability of identified targets.

"This was disappointing to us all, and never the intention.

"The January transfer window is notoriously difficult as clubs are very reluctant to let their best players go at such a crucial time of the season just as we are. Indeed, we resisted strong interest in our players from other clubs."
