Brendan Rodgers thinks Derek McInnes should be in contention for the vacant managerial role at Rangers.

The two men meet later today at Parkhead as the Celtic boss gears up for his 700th game as a manager.

McInnes has been one of the names linked with the role after Michael Beale was sacked following Rangers' recent 3-1 defeat to Aberdeen and Rodgers is not surprised at the speculation.

When asked if McInness should be considered for the job, he responded: " I have said it before – I think he is someone who I am sure would be in contention for the position.

"He has history there at the club, but also he has experience and qualities as a manager.”

The 50-year-old also highlighted the importance of his side getting back to winning ways after their midweek disappointment against Lazio.

Rodgers' side went down 2-1 to the Italian club after a late winner from Pedro and the former Liverpool boss is keen for the team to start building momentum again.

He said: "I think we are in a totally different place to where we were when we played Kilmarnock in the cup game with the greatest respect.

"For 24 hours you are disappointed, it was a great night for us and it looked like we were going to get something from the Lazio game.

"It didn't happen but this is football. When you are at a big club you play lots of games and you have to analyse and after 24 hours you have got to move on.

"That's the strength of this group. We have one or two little upsets in this early part of the season and the players have responded brilliantly.

"We will get going again and they will recover after a few days. We will be ready to go again on Saturday with a big attitude and energy in the game."
