Scott McTominay would be an outstanding piece of business for Celtic this summer.

However, former Hoops defender Mark Wilson is sceptical that a deal could realistically be done for the Manchester United midfielder.

The Scotland international has recently been linked with the Hoops.

The 26-year-old has over 200 appearances to his name for the Red Devils and has excelled for his country under Steve Clarke's tutelage in recent times.

McTominay was faced with a frustrating lack of starts for United last term, and it would appear he'll face even more competition for a place in the first team with the imminent arrival of Mason Mount at Old Trafford.

He's reportedly up for sale this summer, although would command a fee worth around £40million. Brendan Rodgers is said to be an interested party.

And while Wilson would love to see McTominay in a Celtic jersey, he believes the finances involved in any potential transfer would be out of reach for his old club, despite the incoming Jota and Champions League money.

He told Clyde Superscoreboard: "When was the last player you heard who took a wage cut to move? There is very few of them.

"If you are tempting a player away from a club like Manchester United it is probably the opposite and you are giving them a few extra quid, and maybe the opportunity to play at the same level and with Champions League football. McTominay is a difficult one.

"I really like him and for Scotland he has been a star. He has that composure and he has played at a certain level where I think he would fit into the side. It's one, transfer fee and two, the wage - that is what it all comes down to."
