CELTIC have reportedly agreed a £3million transfer deal to sign Alistair Johnston from CF Montreal.

It's claimed the clubs have "thrashed out" a fee worth up to £3m to sign the 24-year-old.

Ange Postecoglou is thought to be a fan of the right-sided defender and has moved quickly to land his man.

Johnston faced off against current Celtic right-back Josip Juranovic in World Cup duty yesterday.

The Canada defender was on the losing end of a 4-1 scoreline as he played against the Croatian full-back with speculation growing over a possible Parkhead exit.

The Daily Record report Johnston - who will 'pocket 10 per cent of his transfer fee' - will complete a move following 'formalities' being finalised in Scotland.

It's said there will be no issue for Johnston to earn a work permit with the defender holding a UK passport due to his Northern Irish mum.

Johnston has impressed for Canada at the World Cup both against Belgium and Croatia despite suffering back-to-back defeats.

The defender has featured as both a right-back and on the right side of a back three for his country at the tournament.

Johnston only moved from Nashville SC to Montreal in December last year in a deal worth £800,000 but is ready to make the switch to European football.

It comes after Johnston revealed he was "honoured" to be linked with a move to Celtic in the New Year.

"To be linked with a club like Celtic is something all young footballers would be excited by," said the Canadian defender.

"It is one of the most passionate fan bases in the world if not the most passionate fan base.

"It is a club that even people who do not follow football know who they are.

“It’s an honour. Just being linked with them, my phone’s been blowing up.

“It nearly put my phone out of commission, halfway through a World Cup.”
