Steven McGarry felt the full force of Ange Postecoglou's Brisbane Roar... twice.

The former St Mirren, Ross County and Motherwell midfielder witnessed sporting history being made in Australia back in 2011.

It was created by now Celtic boss Postecoglou's Brisbane Roar side who went on a 36-game unbeaten run to break the Australian team sports record held by rugby league side Eastern Suburbs for 74 years.

McGarry played for Perth Glory during Brisbane Roar's heyday and he was also a victim of Ange-ball in all its splendour.

It was the Glory who were hammered 4-0 by Postecoglou's men in the 36th, record-setting game of that magnificent run.

McGarry, 42, who played for Glory between 2010 and 2014 said:

"I arrived in January 2010 and Postecoglou got the Roar job roughly at the same time," McGarry told The Celtic Way. "There was a big turnaround in personnel and players and coaches left the club.

"When I went out to Perth Glory, he took over at Brisbane Roar and made a lot of changes in his playing staff.

"Coaches Craig Moore and Danny Tiatto both left. Ange came in and made his own signings and they were smart buys. There was a big swing in terms of players in the first year. Straight from the off he made a difference.

"He was given time to implement his philosophy, his coaching methods and playing style and from the very first day of the season, Brisbane Roar were looking good. They played good football and in 2010-11 that is when Postecoglou started to make a real impact."

That impact took Postecoglou and co. all the way to the precipice of history on November 26 2011 and a showdown with McGarry's Glory at Suncorp Stadium.

"I played in the game that Glory lost 4-0 and Roar set the new record," McGarry recalls. "They smashed us and the record - up until then we had enjoyed pretty close and good games with them but they definitely got the better of us that season.

"It is never nice to get beat in any game but that Brisbane Roar team were pretty special that season as they showed by the unbeaten streak they embarked on.

"It just happened to be Perth Glory that were on the receiving end the day Australian sporting history was made.

"We didn't just lose but we copped a real beating - we got played off the park. There was a massive crowd and it was all building up to that moment under Postecoglou, who had brought something refreshing and different to the A-League in that period."

It wasn't just on the park Postecoglou's presence was being felt. McGarry reckons it was pretty clear off it too - attractive football attracts big crowds.

"You could tell that he was building something pretty special," he said. "The crowds started to come back and Postecoglou's team were packing them in at home games.

"Brisbane Roar were averaging over 20,000 a game and that was a lot of supporters for an A-League team. They were playing with style and they ran over the top of us that day.

"When you look back on it now it was such a significant game. The first time in Australia that a professional sporting organisation had gone 36 matches unbeaten.

"That was really Postecoglou's explosion onto the A-League. Obviously, he was a player first and then he had been a coach with South Melbourne and then the Socceroos national under-17 team but he made a big statement with Roar and that unbeaten sequence is when people really sat up and took notice of him.

"Postecoglou became a really big deal for what he achieved with Brisbane in those couple of years."

Some 11 years later, Postecoglou is on the cusp of doing it all over again with Celtic.

If the Hoops avoid defeat against Hearts at Parkhead on Sunday then they will also make it 36 league games unbeaten under the Aussie, marking the second time in his managerial career that Postecoglou has guided a team to such a landmark.

Celtic Way:

"What I do remember is that after the first two or three games of that season - all the games are shown live in Australia - I just thought 'wow! Brisbane Roar are going to be a team to be reckoned with this season'," McGarry added.

"The football was eye-catching and from that first moment and watching those games you knew instantly that Postecoglou was a manager who had a team to watch.

"He made some shrewd signings as he brought together a decent side with a sprinkling of foreign talent and homegrown players and nurtured them into a real top side."

In the 2011-12 season, Brisbane Roar also became the first team to win back-to-back A-League Grand Finals and Postecoglou became the most successful Australian domestic football coach, with four national titles.

McGarry insists that the Brisbane team were relentless in their pursuit of success. The Roar never died down.

However, they are guilty of being the reason McGarry harbours one major regret as a player in the A-League: he never won a Grand Final.

He did get to one but Perth Glory were denied by - yes, you've guessed it - Brisbane Roar in 2012 after being sunk by two late goals from Postecoglou's team in front of 50,000 fans at the Suncorp Stadium.

Two goals in the final six minutes from Albanian Besart Berisha handed the Roar a second championship on the spin, leaving McGarry cursing the fact his rivals "never stopped".

That is an all too familiar sight and mantra especially if you hail from Glasgow.

McGarry - who is on the lookout for a new job in football after leaving his post as Glory assistant coach earlier this year - added: "Brisbane won the grand final in 2011 which was part of the 36 games. They never took their foot off the gas.

"In the next season they continued to win football matches and the similarities are there again with what we are seeing with Celtic during Postecoglou's second season.

"In 2012, Brisbane Roar did Perth Glory again in the Grand Final when they scored two late goals to beat us 2-1. That was pretty heartbreaking.

"It is my biggest regret from playing in the A-League that I did not win the championship with Perth Glory - they call it the Grand Final over here - and we lost to an Ange Postecoglou team that scored twice in the last five minutes to snatch the title from us.

"Postecoglou is relentless, his teams just play all-out attacking football at a very intense level. They are super-fit and the number of goals they used to score in the last five minutes of matches was incredible.

"I have not watched every Celtic game but I saw them against Kilmarnock and they look to me as if they have improved already. They are definitely not taking their foot off the accelerator.

"It looks to me from the outside looking in as if Postecoglou is replicating the success that he had at Brisbane with Celtic. It is all a bit similar to the effect that Postecoglou has had since he came in the door.

"I am certainly not in the least bit surprised to see him enjoying huge success already anyway. I noticed with interest that they were on the brink of a 36-game unbeaten streak.

"I guess if you were to ask Ange his thoughts on it all then he would probably say that it is a case of 'business as usual'. That's just what his teams do. Postecoglou's teams win football matches and they are pretty good at it.

"Take it from someone who knows and who found out the hard way - not once but twice."

His Brisbane Roar has in effect been replaced with the Celtic Thunder. Parkhead is rocking and roaring every other week these days with Postecoglou at the helm.

He has, of course, also brought the 'Glory' back too.

Just whisper that fact quietly in front of McGarry.
