Jota’s long-range stunner was yet another moment of brilliance from Celtic’s winger – and he couldn’t have dedicated a better strike to his one-time Benfica mentor Fernando Chalana.
The 63-year-old, who was a club legend with the Portuguese giants across two playing spells between 1974 and 1990 as well as a long-time coach at the club, passed away in the early hours of Wednesday August 10 following a lengthy illness.
Jota had his hero’s name written on his wristband and ran towards the camera to celebrate before gesturing towards the sky after netting Celtic’s second of afternoon at Rugby Park.
Speaking in his post-match interview with Sky Sports, he said it was his special tribute to his mentor.
He said: “This week was sad for me because Fernando Chalana died.
“He was one of Benfica’s most glorious players.
“He was someone who marked me through my life. He always believed in me when I didn’t believe in myself, so this one was for him.
“He kept saying to me ‘don’t be like the others, try to be different.’
“Every game I play I will just play for him.”
