CELTIC have paid a fitting tribute to the late Wim Jansen.

The death of the Parkhead hero has been confirmed by former club Feyenoord shortly before 12noon today.

The 75-year-old was diagnosed with dementia in October last year, with Celtic sending their well wishes to their former boss

Jansen famously guided Celtic to the title in his only season in charge in 1998.

Not only was this significant for the Hoops winning silverware, it ended Rangers' hopes of securing ten-in-a-row in during the 90s.

As Celtic manager, he brought Henrik Larsson to Paradise from Feyenoord, who of course went on to become a club legend before moving on to Barcelona.

As well as the league title, the Dutchman secured glory for the Hoops in the League Cup.

A statement from the Parkhead club passed on their condolences to the Jansen family, as they fondly remembered their former manager.

A Celtic spokesperon said: "Everyone at Celtic Park was saddened to hear of the sad passing of former manager Wim Jansen this morning at the age of 75.

"Wim, of course, will forever be remembered as the manager who arrived to stop the 10 in season 1997/98 by lifting the championship on the never-to-be-forgotten day of May 9, 1998 when goals from Henrik Larsson and Harald Brattbakk defeated St Johnstone 2-0.

"That came after the Dutchman, who had played against Celtic for Feyenoord in the 1970 European Cup final, had earlier also led the Hoops to League Cup glory by beating Dundee United in that season’s Ibrox final.

"Also forever remembered as the man who delivered Henrik Larsson to the club, it should also be remembered that Wim rebuilt the team that term with other signings such as the aforementioned Brattbakk, Paul Lambert, Marc Rieper, Craig Burley and Jonathan Gould among others, not only stopping the 10, but setting the wheels in motion for continued success at the advent of the following decade.

"All at Celtic Park offer their most sincere thoughts and prayers to the family and friends of Wim Jansen at this sad time."

A statement from Feyenoord reads: "With the death of Wim Jansen, Feyenoord loses a special person and someone who was associated with the club all his life.

"Jansen served the club as a (youth) player, youth, assistant and head coach, technical director and advisor to the trainers of Feyenoord Academy.

"In October last year it was announced in Jansen's biography that he was suffering from dementia."

A Feyenoord and Dutch football legend, Jansen made over 500 appearances for the club, while he also played in two World Cup finals – 1974 and ’78.

Former Celtic star Chris Sutton passed on his condolences to Jansen's family.

He tweeted: "Really sad news about Wim Jansen passing away. Thoughts and prayers go out to the Jansen family. Wim will always be a Celtic legend."
