Scott Bain: Drafted in from the cold in place of Joe Hart between the sticks and produced a good reaction save from Joaquin's piledriver. He was saved by the woodwork in first-half injury time as Akoukou's strike thudded back off the post and saved brilliantly from Tello early in the second period. He was unlucky for a strike that he initially saved from Iglesias but rebounded back off the post and into the net. 6

Osaze Urhoghide: Handed his long-awaited first start since a summer move from Sheffield Wednesday. He made up some terrific ground to prevent Lainez from netting a certain equaliser. He put himself about with some meaty challenges. He defended robustly at times for a debutant and got forward Didier Agathe style and he can be well pleased with his contribution even after suffering a sickening clash of heads with Bitton. 7

Nir Bitton: The Israeli skippered the side and he got touch tight and was never passive all evening. He was the most experienced player on the pitch and it was up to him to set an example which he duly did. Clattered heads with Urhoghide which saw both men receive treatment for a while and then headed off the line in injury time to preserve the victory. 6

Stephen Welsh: The defender continues to impress with every passing game. He scored an absolute cracker of a headed goal from Abada's corner kick as he glanced in a beauty to give Celtic a dream start on three minutes. He was in a contest all night with the lively Joaquin and Lainez causing havoc but stuck dutifully and manfully to his task. 7

Liam Scales: The Irishman impressed at Tannadice and scored a fine goal in his cameo performance and kept his place in the side. He roamed forward at will and was robust and strong. He was the one who totally relished the chance to show his manager what he could do and gave Ange food for thought for the future. 7

Ismalia Soro: The Ivorian is a tenacious competitor but picked up a stupid yellow card in a tussle with Lainez as he tried to fend him off with his elbow which VAR decided was within the confines of the laws. He missed an easy five-yard pass to Kyogo that would have put him clean through on goal for a second and made way for Turnbull with 25 minutes left on the clock. 6

James McCarthy: The Republic of Ireland midfielder got another chance to get valuable game time into his legs. He hasn't had a clean run since he got to the club and of all players, he was in desperate need of 90 minutes but was struggling not long after the hour mark. It is hard to see the former Everton midfielder becoming a regular at this rate. 5

Liel Abada: The Israeli wide man fired over the corner-kick with enough whip and pace from which Welsh netted the opening goal. The winger is bereft of confidence at the moment and his form really has dipped. He looks a pale imitation of the player who hit the ground running summed up by his fresh air swipe at the ball early in the second half but involved in the penalty incident. 5

Liam Shaw: Another one who was making his debut six months after signing for the club. He was inches away from opening the scoring when the ball was taken off his toe for the corner that led to the opening goal. He tried to drive forward whenever he could and was full of energy without being too flashy. 6

Adam Montgomery: The youngster was handed a rare starting berth but failed to make the most of the opportunity that was presented to him. Tried to go down the line and take on the full-back whenever he could but did not derive much joy from that tactic and did not have as positive an impact on the game as his manager would have liked. 5

Albian Ajeti: A rare outing spearheading the attack for the Swiss hitman and he flicked a header over the top on 17 minutes. He almost scored when Silva made a hash of a clearance which cannoned off him and flashed inches wide but he went down clutching his hamstring on 25 minutes and was substituted for Kyogo. 2

Substitutes:

Kyogo Furuhashi: The Japanese bhoy was supposed to be enjoying a well-earned rest but the manager's hand was forced when Ajeti pulled a hamstring and had to leave the field within 25 minutes. He guided a Urhoghide cross into the side-netting early in the second half. However, disaster struck for Celtic as he caused real concern when he limped off with a suspected hamstring injury on 70 minutes. 5

David Turnbull: Came on for Soro on 64 minutes and expertly and coolly slotted home the spot-kick to make it 3-2 to Celtic on the night and brought real composure. 5

Callum McGregor: Replaced Shaw on 64 minutes and shored things all up rather neatly and tidily. 5

Mikey Johnston: Given a 25-minute outing at the expense of Montgomery and sold himself easily as Joaquin beat him to square the ball for Iglesias to score the equaliser. Picked out a superb cross and assist for Henderson to put Celtic back in front and was denied a fourth goal by the assistant flag and lacked composure and awareness when he sprinted clean through on goal at the end. 5

Ewan Henderson: Came on for Kyogo on 70 minutes and scored for Celtic with his first touch after brilliant play from Johnston. He emulated his brother Liam in getting on the scoresheet to score his first-ever goal for Celtic. 5

Substitutes not used: Joe Hart, Toby Oluwayemi, Greg Taylor, Dane Murray, Josip Juranovic.
