Since walking in the door at the start of June, Ange Postecoglou will have seen his ‘to do’ list grow and grow. On and off-field issues, renewal of contracts, dealing with Leigh Griffiths, recruitment, want away players, dealing with Leigh Griffiths, implementing a new playing style and philosophy, champions league, Europa league, Glasgow Derby’s and of course dealing with Leigh Griffiths. He will have barely had a moment to take stock and assess, it will have been fire fighting from day one.

With the transfer window closing last week, you have to look back and say an impressive amount of business Celtic has been done. International players, experienced older heads, top scorers from two different leagues. The manager was supplied with almost a complete starting eleven as well as some top youth prospects.

Then there was the Glasgow Derby. A match we all thought would be far too soon at the start of the season but as the fixture came into focus, there was confidence we could get something. In the end, a disappointing defeat to last season’s champions in a match that could have gone either way was short of what I’d hoped for.

This international break will have come at an opportune moment for Ange Postecoglou, giving him pause for thought at the task ahead of him.

Despite all the business done in the transfer window and, comparatively to Rangers, the fortunes spent. It looks as though one transfer window isn’t going to be enough to get all the players we need.

Yes, the major surgery was done but in key areas, we’re still short. An injury to Callum McGregor would leave us in an unthinkable position.

Despite performing admirably in Europe against AZ the benchmark for this season are the games against Rangers and once again we came up short. Yes, there were signs of things Ange has been trying to implement but it wasn’t the out-and-out “Ange Ball” we’d been hoping for. I don’t doubt the manager’s capability in these games, it’s still too just too early for him.

The last week or so has been a bit of an eye-opener for me and it might have been for Ange too. You have to expect he has welcomed the arrival of this international break.  With the frantic start to his Celtic career he will, for the first time, have a chance to sit down and appreciate the enormity of the job in front of him.
