FORMER Celtic star Ramon Vega reckons his compatriot Albian Ajeti may need to quit Ange Postecoglou's side and move back home to Switzerland to resurrect his ailing career.

The misfiring Swiss hitman has scored just nine goals for Celtic in 47 appearances since his much-lauded £5 million switch from English Premier League side West Ham United in August 2020.

The 24-year old striker has made 17 appearances under the Aussie this season and has scored just three goals.

Ajeti has not turned out for Celtic since pulling up with a hamstring injury after just 28 minutes during the 3-2 Europa League victory over Spaniards Real Betis early last month.

Vega who was capped 28 for Switzerland admits he has watched on with interest as Ajeti has failed to make the grade both north and south of the border.

The 50-year-old reckons a stint back in his native land could help the attacker recapture the blistering form that saw the Hammers splash the cash and spend £8 million on his services after he bagged 37 goals in 75 appearances for FC Basle in three seasons.

Vega said: "Albain Ajeti cost £5 million and that is a lot of money for any club to shell out, let alone a Scottish club like Celtic.

"Ajet should be banging in at least 10 to 15 goals a season.

"He hasn't done that for West Ham or Celtic.

"In fact, he has not come anywhere close to reaching that kind of figure.

"I remember questioning Ajeti's transfer to Celtic at the time as I wasn't sure that he was the right fit for them.

"Ajeti has not performed to the levels that everyone thought he might after a prolific spell with FC Basle a few years ago.

"Scoring goals in the Swiss League is all fine and well but if you want to be a top player in the top leagues you have to score goals in the big leagues too.

"Ajeti's record in England and Scotland simply has not been good enough for a player of his supposed talent and ability.

"If you go abroad then you have to prove yourself and be strong and bold too.

"Ajeti did not feature regularly in West Ham's first team either and that pattern has repeated itself at Celtic.

"The minute Ajeti left Switzerland his career has gone rapidly downhill.

Celtic Way:

"Maybe it would be better for Ajeti if he headed back to Switzerland and tried his luck there again.

"The style of Swiss football is arguably the type that is best suited to his game.

"At the moment Ajeti is viewed as a player who has now failed in England and Scotland.

"It becomes a very hard sell for a club like Celtic when you have a player like that on your books.

"From a Celtic point of view, the philosophy here for the club might be that this is the best time to cut their losses and get Ajeti off the wage bill and move on.

"It is definitely something that Ajeti and Celtic will both have to think about moving forward.

"I feel that Ajeti coming back to Switzerland in order to kick start his career again might be the best solution for both parties."
