Neil Lennon is reportedly the "back-up option" for the Republic of Ireland job.

This is according to the Irish Mirror who claim that "current England under-21 boss Lee Carsley is in pole position for the role".

It is also reported that Ireland director of football Marc Canham, CEO Jonathan Hill and board member Pat Bonner are "currently in London holding talks with candidates and the ex- Everton midfielder looks set to sign a four-year deal worth €650,000 per annum".

It is claimed there were fears originally that Carsley would snub the approach to stay in his current role which led led to Lennon being favoured as an alternative option.

However, the Irish FA now feel confident of getting their man.

The Celtic hero has been out of work since being sacked by Cypriot side Omonia Nicosia last year due to a poor run of results.

And he previously made clear he is interested in the position. Speaking to PLZ Soccer last year, he said: "Like all these jobs there will be a plethora of outstanding candidates so it will be a process.

"There will be a shortlist and they will be working through it. I am keeping my fingers crossed that I will get an opportunity to speak to them."
